That is a short history of the Uutisraivaaja Media Innovation Challenge.<\/p>\n<p>We introduce below the winners and finalists from the years 2010\u20132023.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2023:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Uutisraivaaja jury decided to award funding to the following four projects:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kaksi maailmaa (Two worlds)<\/strong>, 35,100 euros<br \/>\nTo encourage students to engage in critical thinking by developing a method where stories made by AI and stories made by a journalist can be compared with each other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Demokraattinen toimitus, Rare ry<\/strong>, 50,000 euros<br \/>\nA journalistic method which involves the consumers of journalistic content in the story production process with social media technologies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Street Magazine Rohee<\/strong>, 50,000 euros<br \/>\nDeveloping social media content to make the street magazine known all over the Tampere region as a trusted brand and medium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u00e4-Helsinki Media Oy (East Helsinki)<\/strong>, 50,000 euros<br \/>\nLaunching a local media outlet to provide journalistic content for the residents in East Helsinki region.<\/p>\n<p>The funded projects have to be finalized and published by the end of May, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The Uutisraivaaja Innovation Challenge was organized for the seventh time. Photo: Ida Pimenoff<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>2021:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Uutisraivaaja jury decided to award funding to the following five projects:<\/p>\n<p><strong>archi.tours<\/strong>: Virtual stories about architechture, created with the latest VR technology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caverna<\/strong>: Three short documentaries in a form of a hybrid between a fake documentary and a real one. Workshops about fake news for ninth graders in the Finnish comprehensive school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Pop-Up Newsroom for Algorithm Research<\/strong>: Algorithms: how do they work? A research &amp; journalistic project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mono No Aware \u2013 the Pathos of Things<\/strong>: A five-minute-long virtual reality documentary about the deserted towns around the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in Japan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4minread Lahti \u2013 local news media<\/strong>: Lahti area newsletter delivered to the reader by email.<\/p>\n<p>Each project was awarded 30,000 euros.<\/p>\n<p>The funded projects have to be finalized and published by the end of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The Uutisraivaaja Innovation Challenge was organized for the sixth time. From bottom left: Orna Ben Lulu, Vilma Rimpel\u00e4, Hilma Toivonen and Jan Huhtanen.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 2019 the Uutisraivaaja Award 250,000 euros was granted to RARE.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rareonkova.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RARE<\/a><\/strong> is a new media for the young by the young that brings journalistic content to where the youth are, in ways that they are used to consuming media. RARE produces journalism, for instance, to social media and has taken it into the form of public events. The 250,000 euros award was shared by Frameright and Tripsteri.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripsteri.fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tripsteri<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0app is the first Finnish mobile application providing travel journalism which focuses on high quality and uses virtual technology. The winning team included\u00a0<strong>Tuulia Kolehmainen<\/strong>, <strong>Paula Kultanen Ribas<\/strong>, <strong>Siru Valleala<\/strong>, <strong>Soile Vauhkonen<\/strong>, <strong>Panu Pahkamaa<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Mika Vikstr\u00f6m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/frameright.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frameright<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>provides a solution to an internet-wide systemic problem in framing photographs. The original team included\u00a0<strong>Mari Vaara<\/strong>, <strong>Iris Sandelin<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Tuomas Valtanen<\/strong>, <strong>Jaakko Nygren<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Ville Vaara<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lucify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lucify<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0helps organizations to visualize, understand and communicate important data with interactive data visualizations. The company is known for stories that are longer than magazine articles but shorter than books. The project was a browser ad-on that recommends quality articles for users.
