Winners and Finalists<\/h1>\n

Seven seasons and 16 winners. That is a short history of the Uutisraivaaja Media Innovation Challenge.<\/p>\n

We introduce below the winners and finalists from the years 2010\u20132023.<\/p>\n

2023:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Uutisraivaaja jury decided to award funding to the following four projects:<\/p>\n

Kaksi maailmaa (Two worlds)<\/strong>, 35,100 euros
\nTo encourage students to engage in critical thinking by developing a method where stories made by AI and stories made by a journalist can be compared with each other.<\/p>\n

Demokraattinen toimitus, Rare ry<\/strong>, 50,000 euros
\nA journalistic method which involves the consumers of journalistic content in the story production process with social media technologies.<\/p>\n

Street Magazine Rohee<\/strong>, 50,000 euros
\nDeveloping social media content to make the street magazine known all over the Tampere region as a trusted brand and medium.<\/p>\n

It\u00e4-Helsinki Media Oy (East Helsinki)<\/strong>, 50,000 euros
\nLaunching a local media outlet to provide journalistic content for the residents in East Helsinki region.<\/p>\n

The funded projects have to be finalized and published by the end of May, 2024.<\/p>\n

The Uutisraivaaja Innovation Challenge was organized for the seventh time. Altogether the contest attracted 23 applications.<\/p>\n

2021:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Uutisraivaaja jury decided to award funding to the following five projects:<\/p>\n

archi.tours<\/strong>: Virtual stories about architechture, created with the latest VR technology.<\/p>\n

Caverna<\/strong>: Three short documentaries in a form of a hybrid between a fake documentary and a real one. Workshops about fake news for ninth graders in the Finnish comprehensive school.<\/p>\n

The Pop-Up Newsroom for Algorithm Research<\/strong>: Algorithms: how do they work? A research & journalistic project.<\/p>\n

Mono No Aware \u2013 the Pathos of Things<\/strong>: A five-minute-long virtual reality documentary about the deserted towns around the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in Japan.<\/p>\n

4minread Lahti \u2013 local news media<\/strong>: Lahti area newsletter delivered to the reader by email.<\/p>\n

Each project was awarded 30,000 euros.<\/p>\n

The funded projects have to be finalized and published by the end of 2021.<\/p>\n

The Uutisraivaaja Innovation Challenge was organized for the sixth time. Altogether the contest attracted 17 applications.<\/p>\n

2019: RARE<\/h2>\n

In 2019 the Uutisraivaaja Award 250,000 euros was granted to RARE.<\/p>\n

RARE<\/a><\/strong> is a new media for the young by the young that brings journalistic content to where the youth are, in ways that they are used to consuming media. RARE produces journalism, for instance, to social media and has taken it into the form of public events. The work bases on the sustainable development goals.<\/p>\n

The team includes Vilma Rimpel\u00e4<\/strong>, Orna Ben Lulu<\/strong>, Hilma Toivonen<\/strong>, Matias Rogers<\/strong>, Jan Huhtanen<\/strong>, Atro Lamppu<\/strong>, Miikka Rekola<\/strong>, Joona Muistola<\/strong> and Saara Tuominen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Comcom<\/a><\/strong>, real-time discussion platform for news sites<\/p>\n

Diversity Meter<\/a><\/strong>, application and service for analyzing diversity in the media<\/p>\n

Kansalaiskide<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0open co-creation of knowledge using knowledge crystals<\/p>\n

Voconaut<\/a><\/strong>, mobile audio augmented reality solution<\/p>\n

2017: Frameright and Tripsteri<\/h2>\n

The winning teams of 2017, Frameright and Tripsteri, with the judges.<\/p><\/div>\n

In 2017 two winners were awarded in Uutisraivaaja. The 250,000 euros award was shared by Frameright and Tripsteri.<\/p>\n

Tripsteri<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0app is the first Finnish mobile application providing travel journalism which focuses on high quality and uses virtual technology. The winning team included\u00a0Tuulia Kolehmainen<\/strong>, Paula Kultanen Ribas<\/strong>, Siru Valleala<\/strong>, Soile Vauhkonen<\/strong>, Panu Pahkamaa<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Mika Vikstr\u00f6m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Frameright<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>provides a solution to an internet-wide systemic problem in framing photographs. The Uutisraivaaja team included Marina Ekroos<\/strong>, Ilkka J\u00e4rst\u00e4<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Jaakko Hyv\u00e4rinen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rolling Stories<\/a><\/strong>, inventor of moving multimedia platform called Roller<\/p>\n

2015: Lucify and\u00a0Kuka<\/h2>\n

In 2015 the Uutisraivaaja Award 250,000 euros was shared by Lucify and Kuka.<\/p>\n

Kuka<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is an expert search service that brings journalists and experts together. The original team included\u00a0Mari Vaara<\/strong>, Iris Sandelin<\/strong>,\u00a0Tuomas Valtanen<\/strong>, Jaakko Nygren<\/strong>\u00a0and Ville Vaara<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Lucify<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0helps organizations to visualize, understand and communicate important data with interactive data visualizations. The original team included Juho Ojala<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Ville V\u00e4\u00e4n\u00e4nen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

2013: Long Play<\/h2>\n

In 2013 the digital publication of longform journalism, Long Play<\/a><\/strong>, won the Uutisraivaaja Award. The company is known for stories that are longer than magazine articles but shorter than books. The original team included Johanna Vehkoo<\/strong>, Reetta Nousiainen<\/strong>, Hanna Nikkanen<\/strong>, Anu Silfverberg<\/strong>, Riku Siivonen<\/strong>, Ilkka Pernu<\/strong>, Antti J\u00e4rvi<\/strong>, Ilkka Karisto<\/strong> and Kimmo Hokkanen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

2011: Scoopinion<\/h2>\n

Scoopinion<\/strong> won the first-ever season of the Uutisraivaaja Media Innovation Challenge. The project was a browser ad-on that recommends quality articles for users. The team included\u00a0Johannes Koponen<\/strong>, Mikael Koponen<\/strong>, Mikko Koskinen<\/strong>, Juha Lepp\u00e4nen <\/strong>and Ville Sundberg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the season 2010\u20132011, eleven teams in total made their way to the finalist phase.<\/p>\n

The finalists included Eleet, Naapurisopu, Influence Networks, Collapick, Huuhkaja, Omaradio, Pogo, Knowshop, Pinchett (Murut), and Totuus ja valhe (Faktat oikein).<\/p>\n
